The short version

Settle is a rent guarantee and credit-building service for renters in Canada. To do that job, we collect information about who you are and how you handle money, we share a small piece of it with the landlords and agents you apply to, and (with your permission) we report your rent payments to Equifax to help you build credit. We never sell your data. You can ask us to delete it at any time.

1. Who we are

"Settle" refers to Settle Technologies Inc., a Canadian company operating in the Greater Toronto Area. You can reach our privacy team at privacy@getsettle.ca.

2. What we collect

  • Identity: name, date of birth, government-issued ID, immigration status.
  • Contact: email, phone number, current and prospective addresses.
  • Financial: employment status, income, banking transaction data via Open Banking, credit report (with your separate consent at the underwriting step).
  • Housing: budget, household size, move-in timeline, the units you apply to.
  • Technical: device type, IP address, basic analytics about how you use the site.

3. Why we collect it

  • To check whether you qualify for a Settle guarantee.
  • To share your approval status and qualifying details with landlords and agents you apply to — never your raw bank data or income figure.
  • To report on-time rent payments to Equifax so you can build Canadian credit.
  • To support you (account help, dispute resolution, fraud prevention).
  • To send you service messages (always) and marketing messages (only if you opted in).

4. Who we share it with

We share the minimum information needed, only with parties who help us deliver the service:

  • Participating landlords and agents you apply to — approval status and guarantee details only.
  • Open Banking provider (e.g. Flinks/Plaid) — to verify your income, with your consent.
  • Credit bureaus (Equifax, TransUnion) — to pull your report at underwriting, and to report your rent payments only after you become an active Settle customer, with your separate consent.
  • Service providers who run our infrastructure (hosting, email, analytics) under strict confidentiality agreements.
  • Regulators or law enforcement when legally required.

We do not sell your personal information to anyone, ever.

5. How long we keep it

We keep your information for as long as your account is active and for up to seven years after, to meet our legal, tax, and credit-reporting obligations. You can ask us to delete it earlier — see Section 7.

6. How we protect it

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Access is limited to staff who need it to do their job. We use Canadian and U.S. infrastructure providers; some of your data may be processed outside Canada and is therefore subject to the laws of the country where it is processed.

7. Your rights

Under PIPEDA, you can:

  • Ask what information we hold about you.
  • Ask us to correct anything that's wrong.
  • Withdraw your consent (we'll explain what that means for your account).
  • Ask us to delete your data, subject to legal retention rules.
  • File a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Email privacy@getsettle.ca and we'll respond within 30 days.

8. Marketing & unsubscribing

You only receive marketing emails from Settle if you ticked the optional box on the application form. Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link, and you can also unsubscribe at getsettle.ca/unsubscribe. Service-related emails (application status, payment receipts) are part of using Settle and cannot be unsubscribed.

9. Cookies

We use a small number of cookies to keep you signed in and to understand how the site is used (anonymous analytics). We do not use third-party advertising cookies.

10. Changes to this policy

When we make material changes, we'll email you and update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of Settle after a change means you accept the updated policy.
